These are the current PAYE bands set by the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA). Bands can change with each national budget.
How PAYE works
Malawi PAYE is worked out on monthly taxable pay: basic salary plus taxable allowances. The pay is split into bands, and each band's rate applies only to the part of the pay that falls inside it.
So a pay rise into a higher band never means paying the higher rate on your whole salary, only on the part above the band's starting point.
Example: MWK 850,000 a month
The first MWK 170,000 is tax-free. The remaining MWK 680,000 is taxed at 30%, so PAYE is MWK 204,000 a month.
| Monthly taxable income | Rate |
|---|---|
| First MWK 170,000 | 0% |
| Next MWK 1,400,000 | 30% |
| Next MWK 8,430,000 | 35% |
| Excess over MWK 10,000,000 | 40% |
